Minnesota State Fair food reviews, news and more

  • Daily Schedule Highlights — Sunday, August 26th

After a rainy Friday with the lowest attendance day in two years, the crowds were back at the Fair on Saturday! At some points it felt like the whole state was there. With some rain in the forecast again on Sunday, that may work against what typically is another busy day for the Fair. Sunday is Minnesota Cooks Day at the Fair, featuring cooking demonstrations and discussions of the role of food in the lives of Minnesotans throughout the Fairgrounds.

Below is a selection of what we think is most worthy of checking out on Day Four; for a full daily schedule, visit the Minnesota State Fair official site at http://www.mnstatefair.org:

    • 11:00am: Dress A Sheep Contest (Sheep & Poultry Barn) — teams of four in costumes race to dress their sheep in a complementary outfit. If this doesn’t sound like the kind of unique, bizarre fun that can only happen at the Fair, I don’t know what is.
    • 11:00am, 1:00pm and 3:00pm: Raptor Displays and Flying Demonstrations (DNR Building Garden Stage) — Make your way to the DNR Garden Stage for Last Chance Forever Conservancy’s raptor show, which they have presented at the Fair for many years running. Owls, falcons and hawks swoop over the crowd and the intelligent conservationists dazzle with facts about these majestic creatures.
    • 11:30am-2:15pm: Minnesota State Fiddle Contest (West End Market) — hear the finest fiddle players in the state compete in five different divisions face off in a musical battle for supremacy.
    • 12:30pm and 5:00pm: Sean Emery (Family Fair Stage) — this one is great for the kids, though usually the biggest laughs come from the adults in the audience. Sean Emery is a State Fair legend, performing his juggling act at the Family Fair Stage for decades. I can personally attest, after watching dozens of performances and doing a whole lot of growing up in the meantime, Emery’s act has never lost its luster.
    • 3:00pm, 4:00pm and 5:00pm: The High 48s (West End Market) — a five-piece bluegrass band out of Minneapolis capable of mixing the old school Americana sound with contemporary influences.
    • 3:00pm: Minnesota Horse Show Draft Horse Barrel Racing (Coliseum) — fast-paced action takes over the Coliseum as the Minnesota Horse Show continues for the fourth day, now featuring high-speed barrel racing. This is always one of the most exciting events to watch inside the Coliseum.
    • 6:00pm: Minnesota State Fair Amateur Talent Contest (Leinie Lodge Bandshell Stage) — watch as contestants in various age divisions compete for the opportunity to advance to the Talent Contest Finals, held Sunday, September 2nd in the Grandstand.
    • 7:30pm: Earth, Wind & Fire (Grandstand) — the calendar may still say August for another few days, but this legendary act are sure to turn it over to “September” a little early. With numerous number one hits, the Grandstand is sure to be singing and dancing along all night.
    • 8:00pm: Ipso Facto (International Bazaar) — Minneapolis-based reggae, jazz and funk legends together since the 1980s will ensure that the International Bazaar is the place to dance and party well into the night.
    • 8:00pm: Mayda (West End Market) – R&B and pop collide into the powerful Mayda, who will light up the stage at the Schilling Amphitheater.
    • 8:30pm: BoDeans (Leinie Lodge Bandshell) — pioneers of alternative rock, the band have opened for a number of major musical talents for large arena shows since their formation in the 1980s.
    • 9:15pm: Laser Encore’s Laser Hitz Show (Eco Experience) — lasers and music combine for a visual spectacle each night of the Fair, outside the Eco Experience building.
  • Review: Grilled Peach with Goat Cheese from The Produce Exchange

This year’s most buzzed about new food is not your classic deep-fried, on-a-stick Fair fare, it’s a fresh juicy peach. Yes, this is a surprise, and maybe it’s a sign of changing times. But it’s a welcomed new direction, and when the product is this good, the buzz is justified. A vibrant peach is split in half and lightly grilled, drizzled with honey, and for an additional charge you can get it topped with either Greek yogurt or goat cheese. I opted for the goat cheese version, and while it is costly at $9, the cheese was a creamy addition that compliments the peach well. If you’re ready for a change of pace in Fair foods, give this one a try and enjoy the freshness and the flavors.

  • Review: UpNorth Puff Pasty from Sausage Sister & Me

Sausage Sister & Me has excelled in the art of, well, sausages for decades now, and probably is the best vendor in the whole Food Building (depending on what level of mania you have for cheese curds). Their newest creation is a little bit of a deviation from their usual form, a delightfully flaky puff pasty that masks the porketta sausage involved. The UpNorth name is a misnomer, with the pickles and grain mustard, this is a fun reimagining of a Cuban sandwich. The addition of cheese curds to the mix gives the pasty a beautiful cheese stretch as you bite into it. It is a little small and light on the sausage relative to the $8 price point, but otherwise a good item to try for any meal, breakfast, lunch or dinner.

  • Review: Loaded Nacho Fries from Midtown Global Market’s Taco Cat

The primary story here is that this portion is HUGE. $12 gets you a boat of fries that must weigh in at close to a pound. Do not consider attempting these on your own. This is an item designed to be shared with two to six friends, or however many friends you can squeeze in around the table. Let strangers have a few. Go crazy.

The fries are perfectly crisp, wide-cut and golden in color, smothered with a ton of flavorful black beans and a very good cheese sauce, there is no chance for any one fry to go without some sort of accoutrement. A few differences from the official listed description: the jalapeños were supposed to be pickled, but seemed like standard sliced jalapeños as found on cheaper-quality nachos, and there didn’t seem to be the option to add chorizo sausage as was mentioned. Not that this dish needed any extra heft to it. Taco Cat is only available at the Fair through August 28th, when it will be replaced with another Midtown Global Market restaurant; Taco Cat is here for a good time, not a long time.

  • Review: General Tso Chicken Tacos from Midtown Global Market’s Taco Cat

Reviewer’s bias: I think Taco Cat’s year-round retail location at the Midtown Global Market offers some of the best tacos in the city, so I had some preconceived good will towards their State Fair debut. The biggest difference from their regular location and the Fair version is in price. While the tacos offered at the Fair are larger, two tacos for $12 is a rough price to pay knowing their regular location is roughly half that price. Having said that, if you are looking for an entree-sized meal with flavor and substance, these tacos should hit the spot. Crispy chicken is mixed with ginger, garlic and soy sauce, covered with seasoned sour cream and green onion, all between a flour tortilla to create a hearty and hefty taco. I would not have minded heavier flavors of garlic and ginger, but with the disparate elements at play here, some tastes get lost in the mix. Give these a try, then go for seconds at their real-life location and fall in love with a quirky and wonderful taco shop.
