Review: Root Beer and Cream Popsicle from Jonny Pops

Sometimes in a sea of complexity, the simplest items at the Fair wind up the best bets. Fair staples like grilled corn on the cob or cheese curds are not artisan, but they are timeless for all that they lack. Jonny Pops have been offering wonderful yet simple popsicles from their cart in the West End Market for several years now, and at $4 they are some of the best deals you can find at the Fair, especially for a dessert item. This year’s new flavor is perhaps the simplest yet: a creamy root beer float contained in a frozen bar. While not as good as some of their other varieties, for root beer lovers this is the one to get. I would have liked a heavier taste of root beer as the popsicle leaned more towards a vanilla ice cream profile, but there is certainly nothing wrong with this cool-down on-a-stick.
